WHAT’S NEW IN OUR REGION

PSA/UNHCR -- More than 40,700 Burundi refugees have returned home from camps in Tanzania so far this year, bringing the number of Burundi refugees in Tanzanian camps to below 300,000 for the first time in years.

PSA/IRIN -- The office of the UN High Commissioner for refugees (UNHCR) has completed a four month operation to relocate Congolese refugees from a temporary border centre in Burundi to a camp in the northeastern province of Muyinga.

PSA/IRIN -- The Burundian Agecy for Cooperation and Research in Development (ACORD) has found that the country’s internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returning refugees frequently experience psychological trauma due to the severe living conditions they endure.

*Olivier Isata filed a report about a special program put together in eastern Congo, a program in which former children soldiers are demobilized and trained to going back to a normal life.

*In his report from Burundi, Jean-Baptiste Nimubona talked about how some young Burundians try to welcome their peers returning from refugee camps by facilitating their reintegration in their neighborhoods.

*Yvette Umugwaneza sent a report also talking about former children soldiers in eastern Congo. Yvette said that the first group of these children was resettled in their families after a two month demobilization and training.
